Handmade Paper Factory, Jaipur

Cottage handicrafts have long been held in high esteem in India, and the manufacture of handmade paper is one such craft that today has been employed on a large scale. Aside from its beauty and personal touch, handmade paper is often completely wood-free, instead using fibre from recycled cotton cloth to provide the necessary cellulose. The images below show the progression from setting the pulp through to finishing into a paper product.

Flower petals are often set into the more ornate paper varieties at the first stage.

Freshly dried paper is stored on racks to await flattening and sorting

Patterned stitching embellishes paper to be used for gift bags

Perforations decorate some sheets - these will be backed by another layer when used.

A press is used to provide relief decorations

Shopping bags are folded and assembled by hand

Metal eyelets add to the strength of the gift bags

The finished product - bet you didn't think a paper bag was that complicated!
